The first step to writing an essay and possibly the most overwhelming to some students is planning the essay. Students should have some idea about the topic they want to write about. The problem is that now they need to organize their idea and focus on what the essay will specifically be about.

Brainstorm about the general topic that was chosen to show an even more specific topic. Write down any key words or phrases that can be associated with the topic. One of the key words or phrases could lead to a more specific idea for an essay.

Once a topic has been chosen, the six basic questions can be asked to help supply information that will be given in the essay and could possibly even help discover an even more detailed topic for the essay.

The basic questions are: WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? WHY? HOW?

Now that the basic questions have been asked, they will need to be answered. Reading about the chosen topic and finding answers to the questions is the next step. Write down notes or summarize the information. If direct quotes or paraphrases are used, the source will have to be cited in the essay.

Hello Vila, as you possibly might guess, there is no magic formula for writing a good essay. However, with some effort on your part, you can definitely earn good marks for every essay that you write. Students are good at asking advices but they rarely follow them. It is not the number of GP essays that you will write that you make you a good writer. Rather, write only 1 essay per week. Read about the topic from various sources {internet, magazines, newspapers, book} including asking your friends and teachers about ideas on the title. After a few days of information gathering, start planning the essay and think of the main ideas that you will elaborate upon on each paragraph. A GP essay must contains about 7 or 8 paragraphs, including the introduction and the conclusion. Since most General Paper essays are of argumentative type, it is wise to adopt a 50-50 attitude with respect to the essay title. Never agree completely or disagree completely with the title. Always take a middle path. It will be much easier for you to score marks in the exam.

Now, after having written your draft essay with some spelling and grammatical mistakes being corrected, show it to your teacher or to someone who you think can evaluate your work correctly. Classmates would not make good evaluators. In the exam, your essay should be between 500 to 800 words, however, when you are writing an essay at home, its best to write about 1000 words or even more on the chosen topic. Who knows, if you get a similar topic in the exam, you may at least remember half of it!

Ask the evaluator to read and criticize your work. The essay should be evaluated in terms of relevancy to the essay title, the organisation of the ideas, whether the introduction and conclusion are weak or strong, the strength of your ideas and how you have developed them. Rewrite the essay after considering all the positive criticisms that you have received. If you are getting new ideas later on, do add them. Or if you feel that some sentences needs to be re-phrased, you can always do so. Show it again to the evaluator and to someone else. Repeat this every week or so. Remember, its not the number of essays that you write which counts. Write little, read more and think lots.

hope this helps
