Well, Mauritius is a popular tourism destination for people from around the world. Apart from its natural physical assets as a tropical island, it is also distinguished by the excellent service available in its hotels, its safe environment, and its diverse cultures. Mauritius' combination of beautiful beaches, quality, well run hotels and friendly people has led to the tourism sector becoming the second highest foreign exchange earner for the country.

With the decline of its cornerstone industries, sugar and textiles, tourism is now necessary to drive the economy. This is leading to greater analysis of tourism, a call for more aggressive marketing in Europe in the face of competition and diversification of the tourism product. The current emphasis is on spa, golf and 'green' tourism holidays. Ideas for the future include Mauritius as a tax-free shopping paradise.

Well, the subject Travel and tourism itself has been introduced due to the growing importance of the tourism industry in Mauritius. Mauritius is an open economy based on sugar production, textile export, tourism, call centers, IT and financial services. Tourism itself forms around 9 percent of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). And some 75,000 people are working in the tourism industry. Hence, if we want to have skilled workers for tomorrow, it is important to start training people. This subject will definitely help students at a very early age to have an overview of the travel and tourism industry and help them better understand, in case they want to pursue a career within this field later.
