Each time a blood cell goes around your body, it goes through the heart twice, (double circulation). This happens because there are two circuits:

The systemic circuit is the main circuit. It carries oxygenated blood around the body in the arteries, and deoxygenated blood back to the heart along the veins.

The pulmonary circuit includes the heart and lungs. It carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs to be oxygenated. The blood then goes back to the heart to be pumped around the s

•   Carries oxygen in the form of oxyhaemoglobin in the red blood cells from the lungs to tissues
•   Carriesco2 in the form of bicarbonate from the tissues to the lungs for excretion
•   Carries urea from the liver to the kidney for excretion
•   Carries hormones from the endocrine glands to the target organs where they influence activity
•   Carries antibodies throughout the body to defend it against germs distributes the heat energy from the muscles and liver throughout the body to keep it warm
