What is dental carries?

Dental caries, also known as tooth decay or cavity, is a disease where bacterial processes damage hard tooth structure. These tissues progressively break down, producing dental cavities (holes in the teeth). Two groups of bacteria are responsible for initiating caries, Streptococcus mutants and Lactobacilli. If left untreated, the disease can lead to pain, tooth loss, infection, and, in severe cases, death

How is it caused and why does it give rise to toothache?

It is caused by an improper care of the teeth e.g. brushing of teeth. Broken pieces caught between the teeth support bacteria growth. Bacteria change sugars into acids dissolve the enamel and erode the dentine initially exposing the pulp tissue of the tooth containing the nerves. When the nerves are exposed, toothache occurs.

• Avoid sweets because they are changed by bacteria to acid.
• Brush your teeth properly and twice as it help to remove all food debris among the teeth
• Use a good quality toothpaste
• A well balance diet providing sufficient calcium phosphorus and vitamin D for healthy growth of teeth
• Add fluorine in drinking water to reduce tooth carries

Carnivores such as dogs have teeth modified to kill its prey and cutting flesh from bones. Incisors are blunt and used for scraping food of bon. Canines are large conical curved very pointed. They are used for killing prey and flipping food.
